Dr. Amy Acton

From Homelessness to Hope

Dr. Amy Acton's story is one of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of community support. Born Amy Stearns in Youngstown, Ohio, she experienced a childhood marked by instability and hardship.

Moving 18 times in 12 years, Amy and her brother often went to bed hungry, not knowing where they would sleep the next night. At times, they lived in a tent, experiencing homelessness firsthand. Despite these challenges, the kindness of strangers who shared breakfast and the power of public education gave Amy hope.

"I remember what it was like to feel hungry, worry about where I would sleep, and how I would stay warm," Amy recalls. "At times I felt invisible – and I know that so many Ohioans feel the same way."

Education & Career

Medical Education

Earned her medical degree from the Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine and a Master's degree in Public Health from The Ohio State University.

Pediatrics & Preventive Medicine

Completed residency at Children's Hospital and Ohio State University, creating the first-ever residency rotation in child advocacy.

Project L.O.V.E.

Served as Director, managing public-private partnerships between Columbus area hospitals and community stakeholders to keep children healthy.

Ohio State University Professor

Award-winning professor of maternal and child health and global public health, receiving the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2015.

Columbus Foundation

Vice President for Human:Kind, working to improve community health and well-being, particularly in women's health and youth homelessness.

Ohio Department of Health Director

First woman to serve as Ohio's Health Director (2019-2020), leading the state's COVID-19 response and earning national recognition.

Leadership During Crisis

When Governor Mike DeWine appointed Dr. Acton as Ohio's Health Director in 2019, he was looking for someone who could lead in a crisis. That foresight proved invaluable when the COVID-19 pandemic struck.

Dr. Acton's science-based approach and clear communication helped Ohio become the first state to take decisive action against the virus. Standing alongside Governor DeWine in daily press briefings, she translated complex medical information into language Ohioans could understand.

Family & Community

Dr. Acton lives in Bexley with her husband Eric, a middle school teacher and track coach who has dedicated over 35 years to Bexley City Schools. Together, they have six children and enjoy traveling, exploring nature, and spending time with their growing family.

Amy's personal experience with poverty, homelessness, and the challenges facing working families drives her commitment to public service. She understands that your zip code shouldn't determine your future, and she's dedicated to ensuring every Ohioan has the opportunity to thrive.

"My entire career has been about listening to Ohioans and understanding their struggles. People share with me how hard they work to keep up with the cost of groceries, childcare, healthcare, and other expenses. They feel left behind and like no one cares. I'm running to change that."
